Celtic Cross - The High Cross is possibly the best known symbol of early Christianity in Ireland. The Celtic Crosses are self-contained monuments, generally sculptured form sandstone, some are as high as twenty feet and their main characteristic feature is the circle connecting the arms. In many cases, they also feature ornate figure carving. The great 16th century Celtic Cross at Monasterboice and the Cross of Scriptures, Clonmacnoise are both excellent examples of Irish Celtic Crosses.

Some believe that the Celtic cross was introduced to Ireland by Saint Patrick while converting the pagan Irish. It is believed that he combined the symbol of Christianity, a cross, with the symbol of the sun, to give pagan followers an idea of the importance of the cross by linking it with the idea of the life-giving properties of the sun.  Today the Celtic cross is recognized around the world not just as a religious icon but also as a symbol of Irish cultural heritage.
