Irish Sixpence for her shoe!

4 Farthings = 1 Penny
12 Pence = 1 Shilling
2 Shillings + Sixpence = 1 Halfcrown
4 Crowns = 1 Pound
d – “denarium” the Roman word for Pence or Penny

Composed of silver, the first Irish Sixpence (6d) was minted in 1544.  For centuries, the Sixpence underwent several size and composition changes.  Modern day Irish coinage was issued in 1928.  The Sixpence, which features the Irish Wolfhound and the Irish Harp, was minted from copper-nickel and was issued sporadically until 1969.  In 1971, Ireland abandoned the Pounds/Shillings/Pence money system and introduced the decimal system; the Sixpence was replaced by the Five pence coin.  The Irish Sixpence is still affectionately held as a talisman and timeless keepsake.
